'Fuel Britannia' Straw logs
When I saw Straw Dogs* I was terrified, but this straw has just
been slightly torrified
to
turn it in to a handy log. Straw is the by-product of crops grown
to produce wheat. As an annual crop it produces a very interesting
fuel that has a lot of credibility in terms of sustainability
and the food versus fuel debate. It also answers a lot of questions
relating to the carbon cycle. Burning it is interesting and impressive,
it gives good heat, equivelent to kiln dried logs and gives a
good amount of blue/green tinged flame from mineral uptake whilst
growing and has a long after-glow once the flames die down. I
would expect to get 1-5 hours burn time depending on flue and
stove conditions. It has good gasification, nicely volatile smoke.
If you have a modern stove with good preheated secondary or terciary
air supply you should get a regular 'Aurora
Borealis' in the back of your stove.
